Crystal Palace Secures £22M Deal for Blackburn’s Adam Wharton

Crystal Palace has successfully reached an agreement with Blackburn Rovers for the acquisition of talented midfielder Adam Wharton. The 19-year-old England Under-20 international is poised to make the move to London after the two clubs finalized the deal.

Wharton is scheduled to undergo a medical examination on Tuesday, marking a crucial step in completing the transfer. The comprehensive deal, estimated to be around £22 million, includes add-ons, with the finalization of the terms for a long-term contract with Crystal Palace still in progress.

The impending acquisition of Adam Wharton will mark Crystal Palace’s second senior signing during the January transfer window, following the earlier addition of Daniel Munoz from Genk. This strategic move underscores Palace’s commitment to strengthening the squad and addressing specific areas, particularly in midfield.

The talented midfielder earned recognition as Blackburn’s young player of the season in 2022-23, showcasing his promising potential on the field. Palace had initially faced a setback when an £18.5 million bid was rejected by Blackburn Rovers, as reported by The Athletic. However, with the transfer deadline looming, Palace has returned with an improved offer to secure Wharton’s services.

The urgency to reinforce Roy Hodgson’s squad became evident after the loss of Cheick Doucoure to a long-term Achilles injury in November. The acquisition of Daniel Munoz earlier in the window addressed defensive needs, and the addition of Wharton is set to enhance the midfield department.

Daniel Munoz’s arrival was finalized in a €8.1 million deal, contributing to the defensive stability of the team. Wharton, an academy product from Blackburn Rovers, has exhibited impressive performances throughout the current season, amassing 26 league appearances, with 22 starts to his name.

Despite not featuring in the recent FA Cup fourth-round tie against Wrexham on Monday night, Wharton’s imminent arrival is anticipated to bring added depth and quality to Crystal Palace’s midfield. The club’s proactive approach in the transfer market reflects their ambition to build a competitive and well-balanced squad for the challenges ahead, with Wharton poised to play a significant role in their ongoing campaign.
