Eric Bailly Ends Besiktas Stint, Set for Villarreal Return

Former Manchester United defender Eric Bailly’s stint at Besiktas has abruptly ended after a mere three months, with the termination of his contract paving the way for an imminent return to Villarreal.

Bailly, known for his seven-year tenure at Old Trafford, made a relatively brief mark at Besiktas, featuring in just eight appearances before parting ways. Despite his 113 appearances for United across various competitions, the centre-back struggled to secure a consistent starting position.

Having previously spent the last season on loan at Marseille, Bailly opted for a permanent departure from United to join Besiktas in a move that was anticipated to revitalize his career. However, his stay at the Turkish club has been cut short, with the termination of his reported one-year contract, leaving him on the hunt for a new club.

Besiktas bid farewell to Bailly via a statement, acknowledging the mutual agreement to terminate his contract and wishing him success in his future endeavors.

Although now a free agent, speculation by Italian reporter Fabrizio Romano suggests Bailly’s swift transition to Villarreal for a second spell. Villarreal’s boss, Marcelino Garcia Toral, reportedly desires Bailly’s return, signaling the club’s pursuit of the defender for over a week.

Bailly’s initial tenure at Villarreal from 2015 to 2016 saw him make 47 appearances before his move to Manchester United in a reported £30 million deal. Despite clinching the Europa League and League Cup in his debut season at United, Bailly’s subsequent seasons were marred by injuries, restricting his impact on the field. His return to Villarreal emerges as a potential opportunity for resurgence after his limited stint at Besiktas.
