Luis De la Fuente Set to Extend Coaching Stint with Spain

Spain and their head coach, Luis De la Fuente, are on the verge of extending their partnership, a testament to the coach’s commendable work acknowledged by the Roja’s football federation. De la Fuente assumed the role of Spain’s national coach in December 2022, succeeding Luis Enrique after the Qatar World Cup.

With a span of nearly a year, the 62-year-old coach has made a significant impact on the Roja bench, leaving an indelible mark on the team’s performance. The Spanish football federation is now eager to solidify this successful collaboration by offering De la Fuente a new contract. Although currently under contract until July 2024, talks have commenced to extend the partnership, potentially encompassing the period leading up to the 2026 World Cup in the USA and Mexico.

De la Fuente, set to guide Spain through the Euros in Germany next summer, has demonstrated his prowess and strategic acumen. The satisfaction expressed by the Spanish football federation’s director of football, Albert Luque, attests to the positive trajectory of this collaboration. Luque affirmed, “We are very pleased with his work,” highlighting achievements such as winning the Nations League and securing the top position in the European Championship qualifiers.

While an official announcement is pending signatures, Luque emphasized the mutual agreement between the coach and the federation, stating, “The coach and the federation agree that they will continue.” The harmony within the national team, coupled with the success achieved over the past year, reinforces the determination to prolong this fruitful partnership.

In response, Luis De la Fuente conveyed his happiness in the current coaching position, emphasizing the need to wait for the right moment for official confirmation. “When two parties understand each other… both the federation and I agree. I’m happy to be here,” he remarked. With a record of 9 wins and one loss in the ten matches he has managed for the Spanish National Team, coupled with the triumph in the Nations League during the summer of 2023, De la Fuente’s impact is undeniably significant.

As the discussions unfold and both parties express their contentment, the prospect of Luis De la Fuente continuing at the helm of Spain brings optimism and stability to the national team. The extension of this coaching partnership signifies a commitment to sustained success, with eyes set on future competitions and further accolades on the international stage.
